Description:

At a grand council held at Detroit on June 14, 1778, British Lieutenant Governor Henry Hamilton urged over one thousand Indians assembled before him from more than a dozen tribes of the Ohio Country and the Great Lakes region, to “take hold of the War Axe of Your Father the King” of England and strike a blow against the Americans. In this painting by Cecy Rose, Egouishawey, a war chief of the Ottawa nation, holds a “black” beaded wampum belt with a war hatchet woven into it to signify the intention of his people to accept Hamilton’s request.
